About the Village

Redwick is a small community on the Caldicot Levels on the north bank of the River Severn estuary between Newport and Chepstow. Its history dates back to Roman times but it was devastated by the inundations of the Great Flood of 1606/7.

Once predominantly a farming community, there is now a greater diversity of occupations amongst the residents. However, in a community of just 81 houses and a population of just 223, there are still 11 working farms, six of which have large milking herds.

Redwick has been described by the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust as ‘the best-preserved medieval nucleated village on the Levels’.

Once boasting a medieval church, Baptist chapel, two pubs, a school, shop and a village hall, it still has the church, one pub and a new village hall; the chapel, other pub, school and shop are now private houses.
